In October 2015 a surge of Cuban refugees making their way to the United States via Mexico overwhelmed Mexican migration officials. When they reached the banks of the Suchiate River they had been travling for 25+ days and had crossed 7 borders. Crossing the river was their 8th and final border before the most perilous stretch of their journey—Mexico.
On September 26, 2014 forty three students from the Ayotzinapa normal school were kidnapped and murdered by municipal police and cartel affiliated gunmen in Iguala, Mexico. The event laid bare Mexico's rampant government corruption and cartel violence, and catalyzed widespread civil unrest throughout the country.
They travel 500 miles a day, preforming every night, surviving on beer and truck stop food– as they have done for 15 years.
